Terminator: Dark Fate Full Movie 2019

Terminator: Dark Fate Full Movie 2019

Terminator: Dark Fate is an upcoming American science-fiction action film directed by Tim Miller, with a screenplay by David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes and Billy Ray[5] from a story by James CameronCharles EgleeJosh Friedman, Goyer and Rhodes. Cameron and David Ellison are the film's producers. It will be the sixth installment in the Terminator franchise and the first since Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) to have franchise creator James Cameron involved.
Cameron considers the film a direct sequel to his films The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, while Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys (2015) are described as occurring in alternate timelines.[6] The film stars Linda HamiltonArnold Schwarzenegger, and Edward Furlong returning in their roles of Sarah Connor, the T-800 "Terminator", and John Connor, respectively, reuniting after 28 years. The film also stars Mackenzie DavisNatalia ReyesGabriel Luna and Diego Boneta as new characters.
Distributed by Paramount Pictures in North America, Tencent Pictures in China, and 20th Century Fox in other territories, the film is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on November 1, 2019.[2][7]

Premise

27 years after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a new, modified liquid metal Terminator (Gabriel Luna) is sent from the future by Skynet in order to terminate Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes), a hybrid cyborg human (Mackenzie Davis), and her friends. Sarah Connor comes to their aid, as well as the original Terminator, for a fight for the future.
Director Tim Miller later said that Luna's character "comes from something that is not Skynet, but it's like Skynet."[9]

Cast

  • Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor: The mother of John Connor, the future leader of the Human Resistance in the war against the machines (Skynet). Sarah hunts and kills Terminators to prevent Judgment Day and forestall the coming conflict.[10] Due to her previous encounters with other T-800 Terminator models, she is at odds with Carl.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger as T-800 "Model 101" / Carl: An aging Terminator, one of several sent back in time to kill John Connor in the past.[11] Having abandoned its mission and living in seclusion, it gained autonomy from its original programming and integrates into human society, and is recruited by Sarah and Grace to help protect Dani Ramos.[12]
    • Brett Azar serves as a body double for the young T-800, while CGI will be applied to recreate Schwarzenegger's facial likeness from the 1990s in flashback scenes.[13]
  • Mackenzie Davis as Grace: A soldier-assassin who was converted into a cyborg and sent from the future to protect Dani Ramos from the new advanced Terminator prototype.[14]
  • Natalia Reyes as Daniella "Dani" Ramos: A young woman targeted for termination by the new advanced Terminator prototype Rev-9.[15][16]
  • Gabriel Luna as Rev-9: An advanced Terminator prototype sent back in time to terminate Dani. While he has a traditional solid endoskeleton covered with a "mimetic polyalloy", similarly to the T-X from Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Rev-9 also possesses the ability to separate these two components into two separate, fully autonomous Terminator units.[17]
  • Diego Boneta[18] as Miguel Ramos: Dani's older brother.[16]
  • Edward Furlong as John Connor:[19] The son of Sarah Connor. He is portrayed as a messianic figure who was destined to save the remnants of mankind after Judgment Day by becoming the leader of the Human Resistance against Skynet.[20]
    • Jude Collie serves as a body double for young John Connor, while CGI will be applied to recreate Furlong's facial likeness from the 1990s in flashback scenes.[21][22]
  • Steven Cree[23]
  • Enrique Arce[24] as Mr. Ramos: The father of Dani and Miguel.
Despite rumors that Michael Biehn would be reprising his role as Kyle Reese from The Terminator and the uncut version of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Biehn confirmed in an interview that he will not be in the film.[25]

Production

Development

In December 2013, The Hollywood Reporter reported that a television series was in the works, which would tie into a new Terminator trilogy.[26][27] On September 5, 2014 Paramount announced that Terminator Genisys (2015) would be the first film in a new standalone trilogy, with two sequels scheduled for release on May 19, 2017 and June 29, 2018.[28][29] On February 24, 2015, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that he would be returning for the first sequel in his role as the T-800.[30] While promoting Genisys in Berlin in June 2015, Skydance Media CEO David Ellison and COO Dana Goldberg said that the spin-off TV series was still in development.[31] A month later, Paramount and Skydance declined to comment about the status of the sequel and TV series, although they confirmed that international box-office performance would be taken into consideration.[32] As of September 2015, Terminator Genisys had failed to earn the required $150 million in China to fast-track a sequel.[33]
On October 1, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter said that the sequels and television spin-off were on hold indefinitely because Terminator Genisys had failed to break even.[34] On October 6, Goldberg said that she "wouldn't say [the franchise is] on hold, so much as re-adjusting". According to Goldberg, despite Genisys' disappointing domestic performance, the company was happy with its worldwide numbers and still intended to make new films and the TV series. Production of a sequel would begin no earlier than 2016 because the company planned market research to determine its direction after Genisys.[35]
In January 2016, Paramount announced that the sequel had been removed from its 2017 release schedule.[36] In April 2016, Emilia Clarke, who played Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys, said that she would not return for any sequels.[37] Ellison felt that Terminator Genisys could have been better, so he recruited franchise creator James Cameron to produce the subsequent film with him in hopes of creating a better film.[38][39] Cameron was intrigued by Ellison's proposal to make the film a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, ignoring the events of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys.[39][40] Cameron agreed to produce the film on the condition that Schwarzenegger be involved in it.[41][42] As producer, Cameron was involved in pre-production and script work.[39]
Cameron was involved with the project as of January 2017, and Ellison was searching for a writer among science fiction authors with the intention that Tim Miller direct it. The film was reportedly a reboot, suggesting the Terminator Genisys storyline had been discarded.[43] By March 2017, the studio had chosen not to continue using Schwarzenegger and Clarke,[44] as the sequel to Genisys had been removed from the studio's release schedule.[45]
Later in the month, Ellison said there would be an announcement regarding the future of the franchise before the end of the year, and that it was going to be in a direction that would provide "the continuation of what the fans really wanted since T2".[46] In April 2017, Schwarzenegger said that he was looking forward to being in another Terminator film, and there are negotiations for another studio to pick up the franchise from Paramount and Cameron producing.[47]
In July 2017, Cameron said that he is working with Ellison to set up a trilogy of films and supervise it. The intention is for Schwarzenegger to be involved to some extent, but also introduce new characters and "pass the baton".[48] Schwarzenegger was later confirmed to be reprising his role.[49]

Pre-production

On September 12, 2017, Skydance Media confirmed that Miller will direct the new Terminator film,[50] which was initially scheduled for release on July 26, 2019.[51] The film's story was drafted and conceived by Miller, Cameron, and Ellison. A team of writers – consisting of David S. Goyer, Justin Rhodes, and Josh Friedman (creator of the television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) – was hired to write the script.[39][52] Cameron and the writers watched the Terminator sequels that came after his initial films, and it was determined that the storylines of the later films were too complex when it came to time travel.[39][40] Weeks were spent working on the story, which was eventually envisioned as a new Terminator film trilogy.[39][53][54] By November 2017, Billy Ray was brought in to polish the script.[52] By January 2018, Goyer revealed that a draft of his script was completed.[55] As the start of filming approached, Cameron felt that the script needed improvement and made the changes himself.[39]
Miller said that the destruction of Cyberdyne at the end of Terminator 2: Judgment Day is an event which would change the future "but no one knew how. And I don't think the movies that came after it really explored that in a clean way like I believe we are, with true consequences, and it makes perfect sense for Sarah to be the one to face those consequences since they were her choices to begin with."[56] Before screenwriters were hired, Miller requested that a group of novelists be consulted on how to reinvent the franchise. Among the novelists was Joe Abercrombie, who suggested the idea of a female character who is half human and half machine, forming the origins of the character Grace.[57] Linda Hamilton was pleased with the film's characters, and felt that earlier sequels to Terminator 2 lacked characters that the audience would care about.[58]
The film's writing credits, as recognized by the Writers Guild of America are screenplay by David S. Goyer & Justin Rhodes and Billy Ray; story by James Cameron & Charles H. Eglee & Josh Friedman and Goyer & Rhodes.

Casting

In May 2017, Schwarzenegger confirmed he would appear in the next Terminator film, with Cameron overseeing the production.[59] In September of the same year, it was announced Hamilton would return to reprise her role as Sarah Connor.[60] Because previous Terminator films did not do well with audiences, Miller felt it was necessary to have Hamilton reprise the role.[56] Cameron, Ellison and Miller only wanted to bring back the Sarah Connor character if Hamilton would reprise the role. The film's storyline was devised first so the trio would have an idea to pitch to Hamilton.[39] Cameron said that he sent Hamilton a "long rambling email with a lot of reasons why she should do it and a lot of reasons why she shouldn't." Cameron's main reason for why Hamilton should return was that people liked her in the role.[38] There was never a version of the film that excluded Hamilton, and Miller said there was no backup plan in the event that she declined the role.[61]
After approximately six weeks,[62] Hamilton chose to sign on to the film,[56] which did not yet have a completed script for her to read as it was still being refined.[63] Initially, Hamilton was not sure if she wanted to reprise the role,[64] saying, "I didn't want it to look like a shameless money grab. I am living this quiet, lovely life that doesn't involve being a celebrity, and you really have to think, do I really want to trade that in again for another 15 minutes?"[62] Because so much time had passed since her 1991 appearance as Sarah Connor, Hamilton had assumed that she would never reprise the role, and she was surprised by the offer to do so.[56] Hamilton said about her decision to return, "I was very pleased that all of the years had passed, because I could fill the years up with so much backstory and inner life that could power the character."[63] Hamilton spent more than a year working with a fitness trainer to get into physical shape for the role.[63][56] Hamilton said she put 10 times the effort into her physique than she did for Terminator 2. This included a regimen of supplements and bioidentical hormones, as well as training with Green Berets.[65][66] Commenting on Hamilton's role, Cameron said he liked the idea of an action film starring a 62-year-old actress.[67][68]
The production was also looking to cast an 18 to 20-year-old woman to be the new centerpiece of the story.[60] Hamilton rehearsed lines with several actresses who were auditioning for the role of Dani, and she immediately felt that Natalia Reyes was the right choice.[69] In March 2018, it was announced that Mackenzie Davis had been cast in the film.[14] Miller said about Davis, "I didn't just want a woman who could physically fit the role but emotionally as well. Mackenzie really wanted to do it; she came after the role. She worked harder than anybody."[57] After Davis was cast, she undertook physical training for the film's fight scenes.[9] Schwarzenegger and Gabriel Luna also underwent physical training for the film.[70]
Because the film is partially set in Mexico City, the cast includes several Latino actors,[71][72] including Reyes, Luna, and Diego Boneta, who were cast as primary characters in April 2018.[15] Reyes said, "This movie is a reflection of Hollywood now. We are just changing these stereotypes and the ideas and the cliches of what a Latino should be."[71] By June 2018, Jude Collie had been cast as the double for a young John Connor, with Brett Azar reprising his role from Genisys as the body double for a younger T-800.[21] On July 18, 2019, during a panel for the film at San Diego Comic-Con, Cameron confirmed that Edward Furlong would reprise his role of John Connor from Terminator 2: Judgment Day.[20] Furlong later announced that his role in the film was small.[73]

Filming

Production was initially intended to start in March 2018, but was delayed due to casting. It was then expected to start during May and end during November with filming taking place in HungaryUnited KingdomSpain and Mexico.[74] In April 2018, the film's release date was delayed to November 2019.[75] Filming began on June 4, 2018, under the working title Terminator 6: Phoenix,[24][76][77] in Isleta del MoroAlmería, Spain.[78][79] While filming in Spain, Luna coached several actors on how to speak Spanish with a Mexican accent.[71]
Filming subsequently moved to Origo Film Studios in Budapest, Hungary,[80][81][82][83] with the intention of shooting for a month there before filming the rest of the film in the United States.[citation needed] In Budapest, special effects supervisor Neil Corbould created the film's largest set piece: the fuselage of a Lockheed C-5 Galaxy plane. The set was constructed on an 85-ton gimbal, the largest ever built. The set was capable of rotating 360 degrees, and could tilt backwards and forwards at 10 degrees. The set was powered by five 200-liter-per-minute hydraulic pumps, as well as more than a mile and a half of hydraulic hoses. A pit had to be dug in the concrete floor of the sound stage to accommodate the large set, which took five months to build. The set allowed the camera crew members to strap themselves inside. The plane set was padded for actors who shot scenes inside it. Foam replicas of military vehicles were also situated inside the plane set with the actors.[84] In late July 2018, Schwarzenegger began filming scenes in Budapest.[85] Filming moved to the United States in mid-October.[86] Schwarzenegger completed filming on October 28, 2018.[87] Filming wrapped in early November 2018.[88]
The film, like Cameron's initial Terminator films, will be rated R, whereas the previous two films were rated PG-13.[89][90][39] Miller said the film would be rated R because "the fans kind of demanded it, in a way", saying that "the DNA of Terminator" is an R-rated movie and that "to not do it R feels disingenuous to the source material".[42][91] Initially, certain scenes were filmed two different ways: with and without R-rated violence and language. This gave the filmmakers an alternative in the event that the film's intended R rating should be reconsidered. The filmmakers eventually abandoned this method after definitively deciding on an R-rated film. Cameron, explaining the decision, stated that "eventually we just said, 'To hell with this, it's a waste of time.'"[39][53]
During filming, Cameron made further changes to the script to perfect the characters. In some cases, Cameron's script changes were submitted to Miller only a day prior to filming the scene.[39] Hamilton rejected certain lines of dialogue that she felt were uncharacteristic for Sarah Connor.[63][92] Cameron did not visit the set, as he was busy filming his Avatar sequels,[39] although he provided feedback on Miller's director's cut of the film.[57] In July 2019, there were plans to expand Luna's role with upcoming reshoots.[9]

Post-production

According to Cameron in February 2019, the film's working title was Terminator: Dark Fate.[93] This was confirmed to be the film's official title the following month.[5]

Visual effects

The visual effects are provided by Industrial Light & Magic and Scanline VFX, supervised by Alex Wang, David Seager, Arek Komorowski and Eric Barba as the Production Supervisor with help from Blur StudioDigital DomainMethod Studios, Unit Image, Rebellion VFX, The Third Floor, Inc. and Cantina Creative.[94]

Music

In March 2019, it was announced that Junkie XL would compose the score for the film.[95]

Marketing

A first-look promotional image showing the film's three lead actresses was released in August 2018. It was the subject of some misogynistic Internet comments.[96][97][98] A teaser trailer for the film was released on May 23, 2019,[99] and features the cover version of Björk's "Hunter" performed by John Mark McMillan.[100][101] The film's theatrical and international trailers were released on August 29, 2019.[102][103] The trailers' release date marked the anniversary of the original Judgment Day date given in the second film.[104] In September 2019, Adobe Inc. and Paramount Pictures launched a contest for people to create their own remix version of the trailer using Adobe software and assets from the film.[105]
The 2019 video game Gears 5 allows the player to play as either Sarah Connor with Hamilton voicing her character or a T-800 Terminator model. The game was released on September 6, 2019.[106] The T-800 model will also be a downloadable playable character in Mortal Kombat 11. The downloadable content is set to be released on October 8, 2019, a month before the film's release using Schwarzenegger's likeness, but the actor will not be voicing the character.[107][108] A mobile game, titled Terminator: Dark Fate – The Game, is scheduled for release on November 1, 2019.[109]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures in North America, Tencent Pictures in China, 20th Century Fox outside of North America and China on November 1, 2019[2][7] and in UK cinemas on October 23.[110]

Box office

Early projections in September 2019 suggested that the film would have a disappointing opening weekend in the U.S., with an estimated $35-$45 million.[98][111]
